Mahindra may soon launch the Thar 4×2 in the Indian market. The domestic carmaker is expected to introduce the affordable version of the Thar in the coming weeks. Ahead of the much-awaited launch, the 2WD version of the Thar was spied in a new golden color called Blazing Bronze. This special shade complements the overall profile of the Thar and makes it look even more stunning.
The introduction of new colors with the rear-wheel drive version of the Thar seems to be part of Mahindra’s strategy to differentiate this model from the more expensive 4×4 models of the SUV. Other color options for the Thar include Aqua Marine, Napoli Black, Red Rage, and Galaxy Grey.
As per reports, it is expected that Mahindra will price the new 4×2 Thar aggressively and it could be around Rs 2 lakh cheaper than the 4×4 Thar.
The Mahindra Thar 4×2 comes equipped with the same infotainment system as its 4×4 sibling, and other interior details are shared between both models. However, the 4×2 variant gets a smaller utility space instead of the selector lever which is used on the 4×4 Thar. This model also has a “Rough Road” option instead of the off-road mode available with the 4×4 version.
Mahindra has added a 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine to the rear-wheel drive Thar. This smaller engine is similar to the 2.2-liter turbo diesel in the 4×4 Thar, but with more power and torque. The 1.5-liter turbo diesel produces 115bhp and 300Nm of torque and will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission
As per reports, Mahindra will stick with the 2.0-liter petrol unit when it comes to the 4×2 RWD Thar. This engine generates 150bhp and 300Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The company may reveal the price of the new 4×2 RWD Thar around Auto Expo 2023.
Mahindra is hoping that the 4×2 RWD Thar will appeal to people on a tight budget. It will be interesting to see how this variant fares against the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
